Deerness Valley Gymnastics Club

Young gymnasts from Deerness Valley Gymnastics Club enjoyed great success at the Acrobatic Gymnastics European Championships in Portugal in September. Fifteen gymnasts from the club were selected to represent Great Britain in the Championships and their commitment and hard work paid off when the Junior Men's Four (Aged 12-19) won gold medals, Men's Four (Aged 11-16) and Men’s Pair (Aged 11-16) won silver medals and Junior Women’s Pair (Aged 12-19) won bronze. All six wards of the Parish Council supported the Club by assisting with the funding for the trip to Portugal. An excellent performance all round!.

Langley Moor Foundation Sculpture

The Chairman of the Council, Councillor David Bell, officially cut the ribbon at the Langley Moor Foundation Sculpture on 11th November. The sculpture is part of a Community Arts project commissioned initially through the new Lidl store after discussions with local residents and custom-built by local artist Brian Brown from Witton Gilbert. The idea behind the sculpture was to develop a local focal point which would celebrate the mining history of the area. Lidl has funded the production of the sculpture whilst the Parish Council together with Unitary Councillor Ronnie Rodgers provided financial support for the plinth in which the sculpture is housed.

Local residents also enjoyed a preview of what the new Lidl store has to offer at the special pre-opening event on the same evening. On behalf of all our residents the Council would like to welcome Lidl to the village.

The Orchards

The Orchards Christmas tree lights will be turned on by Roberta Blackman-Woods on 4th December at 5p.m. The tree was kindly provided by County Councillor Paul Taylor.
The Parish has recently provided a selection of spring bulbs for the Care Home which will be planted by their gardener, Stuart.

Brandon Welfare Park- the Council has submitted a planning application on behalf of ‘Friends of the Park’ for the installation of new recreational areas with play equipment and CCTV. The hard work and dedication of the group is now paying off and hopefully the scheme will come to fruition by next summer. Well done to all involved.

Carrside Youth Club– During October half term 7 young people from Brandon, New Brancepeth and Ushaw Moor completed the 136 mile coast to coast, along with 21 other people from across Durham. The young people excelled in attitude during a very physically and mentally demanding project and raised funds for Grace Hospital along the way. The Parish Council congratulates the youngsters and the staff and volunteers from Carrside who supported them.

Play Area

Now that our new Primary School is to be built on the existing school site the way is now clear for the new play area proposed for the field at Newhouse Road.
A planning application will be submitted in December and the equipment will be ordered at the end of January 2010. Installation will take place as soon as possible after that.

A coffee morning, organised by Kate Lewis, was held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support in Waterhouses Village Hall on 3rd October 2009. A total of £172 was raised. Well done to Kate and everyone who helped on the day or contributed in any way. A very worthwhile cause - we’re sure you’ll agree.

New Brancepeth

The Youth Club celebrated its 25th anniversary with a party in the village hall on 12th November including a photographic exhibition and a buffet followed by a disco for the young people.

The Residents Group were recently given a donation by the Parish to provide a Christmas Party for the elderly members. The party will be held on Saturday 5th December in the village hall.

Village Carol Service will also be held in the village hall on 20th December at 3p.m.

The Jazz Band has been enjoying great success lately with the band achieving 3rd place in their group in the world championships in Liverpool and 1st place in their group at the UK Federation of Jazz Bands Jamboree in Ayre.

Ushaw Moor

Silver Trees– the Council has recently added to its floral displays in Ushaw Moor with the installation of a flower bed and border planting in the area of the silver trees at Whitehouse Lane. The area contains shrubs and perennials and will mature over the next few years making an attractive feature of the centre of the village.

Christmas Lights

The Christmas lights, switched on at the end of November, will further enhance the area and give a festive feel to the village. The Parish has again supported Ushaw Moor Together with this event.

Meadowfield and Langley Moor

Remembrance Service– The annual remembrance service was held at St.John’s Church, Meadowfield on Sunday 8th November. The council arranged for Durham University Band to lead the parade to the Memorial in Brandon Village where wreaths were laid by members of the British Legion and the local parish ward members. Meadowfield and Langley Moor wards together with the other four wards supported the annual poppy appeal with a donation of £500.

The Chairman, Cllr David Bell, Members and staff would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
